What if a man claimed to have the truth and claimed it was from God? What if this man performed incredible miracles never before or since seen like healing the sick, restoring crippled limbs, giving sight to the blind, and even raising people from the dead? What if this man claimed to be God in human form, foretold the future, even his own death, and predicted He would rise from the dead and did? Would you believe He was who He claimed to be?

Jesus Christ did these things which were observed by eyewitnesses who became the first Christians. Jesus claimed to be the source of truth when he said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life…” He is the first person to refer to God as his Father in heaven and went on to say that “No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).”

This is an outrageous claim for anyone to make. His claim is either false because Jesus was lying, or because He was out of His mind and really believed he was God but was not, or… He was telling the truth.

How can Jesus be the only way to God? What about all the other religions! That’s too exclusive, right? Not at all! All “religions” are man’s attempt to reach out to God by being good enough to be accepted by Him and be in His good graces. They are about DOING things.

God realized that there is no way we could be good enough to work our way to heaven because we would have to be perfect (without sin according to the Bible and we are all born with it) so He provided a way. Jesus, God’s one and only son came to earth from heaven through a miraculous virgin birth, lived a sinless life, fulfilled Old Testament prophesies about a coming messiah, taught about what heaven was like, and how we should live on earth, performed miracles to prove who He was, then willingly sacrificed Himself as a payment for all of mankind’s sin by death on a cross so that ANYONE who believed in Him and what He did would be forgiven by his Father God in heaven.

God’s way vs. man’s way

God’s forgiveness is non-exclusive and available to everyone, no matter what kind of bad things you have done. It’s a free gift! See, it’s not about what you have done and have to do now to be acceptable to God. It’s about what God has already DONE for you. Unlike other religions, Christianity is about a relationship with God. It’s God’s attempt to reach out to you. He loves you more than you could know and wants to have a relationship with you on earth and spend eternity with you. But it’s your choice. He gave us free will to choose or reject Him because without free will there can be no love. God will not force His love upon you or it would not be love.

Jesus knows our hearts and we tend to be prideful people who think that we can earn our way to heaven on our own path or merits because we are “good” people. This is why He said “…narrow (is the) road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7:14 NIV).” God’s ways are not like our ways. Someone once said: “Mankind says ‘Show me and I will believe’ but God says ‘Believe and I will show you.’” That’s why it’s called “faith.”

What if I don’t choose God’s way?

The downside of not choosing God’s way while you are on earth is not only missing out on a relationship with the one who truly loves you and created the universe, but you are also choosing to not be with God for eternity. Jesus said “But if anyone denies me here on earth, I will deny that person before my Father in Heaven (Matthew 10:33 NLT).”

You might be thinking “Hey, that’s not fair! How could a loving God reject a good man (or woman) and make them live separately in hell for eternity?” A better question is “How could a good man (or woman) reject a loving God who wants to live with them for eternity, but choose separation in hell forever instead?” God is loving and forgiving, but you not only have to know that in your head, you need to accept and receive that forgiveness in your heart.

How does the Truth set me free? Free from what?

All you have to do is acknowledge or “own up” that you have done wrong things (called “sin” in the Bible, and we all have), ask forgiveness for those things from God, and accept that Jesus died and already paid the penalty for your sins. It sounds easy but it takes some humility, and God knows your heart. There are no magic words, but if you sincerely do that you can know God and feel His presence and live with Him for eternity in heaven when you die. You will not only be freed from the bondage of sin, you can also discover His will and plan for your life, know the purpose for which you were created, and use the gifts He has given you to live your life to the fullest. Jesus even said “…I have come in order that you might have life – life in all it’s fullness (John 10:10 GNT).”

If you have never done this and your heart is beating fast now, guess who is knocking at the door of your heart? Jesus said “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him and he with me (Revelation 3:20 NAS).” In other words, He will come in to your heart and make Himself known to you. Yes, you can know God your creator!

How can I have a “relationship” with God?

If you are sincerely ready to open the door and receive Christ as your Lord and Savior you can speak to him in prayer right now and receive his love. Read the sample prayer below, say it in your own words, or do both to start your relationship with God through Jesus Christ right now:

“Dear God,

I admit that I have fallen short in my life and sinned against you and others. I sincerely ask for your forgiveness and I accept that Jesus is who he claimed to be, your Son, and that he took the punishment for my sins when he died on the cross. I now ask Jesus in to my heart and want to know him and follow him the rest of my life. Thank you for your forgiveness God!

Amen!”

If you sincerely prayed that prayer to God just now for the first time, you have been forgiven and you are now a new creation, a Christian, a follower of Jesus, and a child of God who will live with him in heaven for eternity! You just did the most important and profound thing a human can do. Congratulations! The Bible tells us that when this happens the angels in heaven rejoice and have a party because you now belong to the family of God (Luke 15:10). Now you know the Truth, and “…the truth will set you free (John 8:24)!”
